POWER Engineers Shares Perspective Gained in IEC 61850 Lab
POWER Engineers (POWER) has started sharing insights it has gained from more than two years of rigorous vendor-neutral testing of the emerging IEC 61850 standard. Engineers from the firm’s industry-leading IEC 61850 lab delivered training at a June technical conference in the Midwest.
“We wanted to learn whether the various vendor implementations of the IEC standard deliver on the promise of inter-operability,” says Keith Gray, P.E., a lead engineer in POWER’s lab and presenter at the conference.
Drawing on experience gained in the lab, POWER delivered theoretical and practical information on the standard and its application. The goal of the presentation was to give conference attendees a better understanding of the standard, its protocols and applications. Mr. Gray also taught best practices in substation network architectures that support the standard.
“We think that IEC 61850 will become much more prevalent in the U.S. market in the near term,” said Scott Olson P.E., senior project manager for smart grid projects at POWER. “We’ve been working with IEC 61850 for over two years in anticipation of its adoption as the prevalent standard in substation protection and control systems. Providing IEC 61850 training at technical conferences allows us to give back to the industry by providing perspective on findings we’ve gathered in the lab.”
As another step toward acceptance in the industry, FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) now includes IEC 61850 as a part of its recommended smart grid protocols. POWER is using the lab as a learning environment to prepare its engineers and to help clients transition smoothly from legacy protocols to the emerging smart grid protocols. The firm is also rapidly expanding distribution of its quarterly newsletter; please contact Scott Olson to subscribe.
