Challenges and Rewards of IEC 61850 Implementation
By Jake Groat, POWER Engineers
New technology continually changes the methods of design, construction, testing, training, and documentation; forcing the power delivery industry to evolve at a blurring speed. Part and parcel of this evolution includes communications infrastructure, sensor technology and intelligent hardware. As the electrical power grid moves closer to pervasive networked intelligence, personnel and corporations must examine their procedures and processes to meet this demand. Provided with the proper tools and understanding, however, stakeholders will ultimately be rewarded with lower costs, more intelligent enhanced data access, and more efficient substation design.
