In support of the purchase of a local utility in Michigan, POWER performed a due diligence of the McClure Hydroelectric Station near Marquette, Michigan. The due diligence was performed on the dam and powerhouse as part of an Independent Engineering assignment to the buyer of the facility and the local utility, an infrastructure investment fund. The due diligence included a conditions assessment, an environmental compliance and FERC licensing review, and OpEx and CapEx assessments.
The facility was built in 1919 as a storage-regulation installation and is located on the Dead River, a tributary to Lake Superior. It includes reservoir, dam, spillway, siphon, power intake, penstock, and powerhouse. The reservoir has a capacity of about 2,500 acre-feet. The dam consists of a concrete gravity section with an un-gated overflow spillway between two non-overflow sections. The powerhouse has two horizontal axis Francis-type generating units capable of producing 8.5 MW of power and operates at a head range of 424 feet. The penstock is a seven-foot-diameter welded steel pipe approximately 13,225 feet long. The penstock was replaced in 2010.
