POWER performed a FERC five-year, part 12 dam safety inspection for this 50-year-old hydroelectric project located in a remote and environmentally sensitive area of Alaska on Mitkof Island. The scope of work included field inspection, observations and comments concerning settlement of the dam, penstock and power house; movements of the dam; erosion of the dam and foundation; seepage and leakage of the dam; cracking of any structural element; structure deterioration; geologic conditions; foundation deterioration; condition of the spillway, intake structure, penstock and tailrace; reservoir rim stability; uplift pressures in structures and foundation; and functioning of the foundation drainage system.

- Designing turbine bypass system to guarantee minimum flow to fish hatchery during turbine shutdowns
- Designing automatic generation controls
- Designing leakage recovery system
