Microwave Links and High-Availability Communication Systems in Protection Schemes
By Dr. Harvey Lehpamer
Microwave links are widely used for utility applications, though many utilities lack thorough understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of various microwave system configurations. The role of microwave communications is to provide reliable communications in places where fiber-optic communications are either not available or when there is a need to increase reliability of the fiber-optic system by providing alternate physical connection. This paper provides an overview of microwave radio characteristics, configurations and topologies, and discusses some possible scenarios for licensed and license-exempt microwave link applications in the utility environment.
